KVSC student journalists win AP awards

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State University's student-run radio station, KVSC 88.1 FM, has picked up six Minnesota Associated Press Broadcasters Awards for work by its news and sports team. The awards will be presented at a ceremony March 27 during the Midwest Journalism Conference in Bloomington, Minn. Students at KVSC won the following awards for stories broadcast in 2008:

  • Best in Show, radio class one, "Rage Against Abuse," Aaron Bjorkstrand, senior, of Burnsville, Minn.
  • First Place, feature, "Rage Against Abuse," Aaron Bjorkstrand
  • First Place, sports reporting, "Husky Hockey Review," Aaron Bjorkstrand
  • Honorable Mention, sports reporting, "Husky Sports Friday," Peter Tomala, junior, Columbia Heights, Minn., and Patrick Sullivan, junior, Kasson, Minn.
  • First Place, series/special, "Paul Wellstone Remembrance," David Iverson, senior, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
  • First Place, documentary/investigative, "SCSU Recycling Program: Green or Guilty?", Jenna Wundrow, senior, Jim Falls, Wis.

KVSC student reporters competed against broadcasters throughout Minnesota (both commercial and non-commercial) in the radio class one category, stations with one or no full-time newsroom employees. KVSC broadcasts eight weekday newscasts and more than 60 St. Cloud State sporting events every academic year.
